JBJ Soul Foundation Selected as A Community with Heart Grant Recipient

This holiday season, Kohl’s is surprising more than 150 nonprofits nationwide with a total of $8 million in grants to further each organization’s mission. This year, JBJ Soul Foundation is honored to once again be chosen as a recipient of Kohl’s A Community with Heart program.  Jon Grosso and Kate Beck from Kohl’s visited JBJ Soul Kitchen Red Bank for our 5-10-15 Anniversary Celebration and to share the exciting news.

The program strives to enrich organizations dedicated to family health and wellness and each identified local nonprofit is committed to making a difference for families in their communities across the country. The donations are made possible through Kohl’s philanthropic merchandise program, Kohl’s Cares®, which sells children’s books and toys, and donates 100 percent of the net profit to charitable organizations nationwide that improve the health and wellness of families.

“At Kohl’s, we understand the importance of giving back. That’s why this holiday season, we are honored to celebrate these local nonprofits that generously serve their respective communities with all of their hearts,” said Greg Revelle, Kohl’s chief marketing officer. “These organizations from across the country turn hopes into action. Hand-selected by our associates, the more than 150 nonprofits selected exemplify what it means to serve others and we are proud to provide support that will enable them to expand their efforts.”

Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation To Help Provide Housing For Homeless Veterans

Rock Legend’s Latest Grant Will Support American Legion’s Veterans Center of Hoboken

HOBOKEN, NJ, (July 12, 2021) American Legion Post 107 and Hoboken Councilman Phil Cohen today announced that the Post’s nonprofit Veterans Center of Hoboken has received a generous match grant of $100,000 from the JBJ Soul Foundation, founded by Jon Bon Jovi, as the Post creates new housing and supportive services to provide homeless veterans with a place of their own.

“We know that even one homeless veteran living on the streets is one too many,” said Commander John P. Carey of Post 107. “They are heroes who served our country and sacrificed, and now need a helping hand. We are grateful to the JBJ Soul Foundation for such a generous grant, which will help make the vision of an expanded Veterans Center a reality.”

“JBJ Soul Foundation is dedicated to continuing our work with veterans, addressing issues of hunger and homelessness, and we are all inspired by the Veterans Center of Hoboken,” said Jon Bon Jovi. “The Center is not only expanding with 18 additional furnished housing units, but is also providing services including physical and mental health care and employment opportunities for these struggling veterans. This is exactly the kind of mission and positive impact the Foundation is proud to support.”

Hoboken Councilman Phil Cohen thanked the JBJ Soul Foundation for partnering with American Legion Post 107 on this extraordinary project, saying “I believe we have a moral duty to ensure the men and women who honorably served our country have a roof over their heads and receive the critical support services they deserve after all they have given our nation.”

Beginning today, donations from individuals, civic groups, small businesses, and corporations will be matched dollar for dollar until the challenge grant is fulfilled. Gifts from $25 to $25,000 are eligible. To Support the Veterans Center of Hoboken, visit Hobokenlegion.org/give or mail a check (made payable to Veterans Center of Hoboken) to 308 2nd Street, Hoboken, NJ 07030.

After its Hoboken headquarters was demolished by Superstorm Sandy in 2012, American Legion Post 107 rebuilt a flood-resistant facility that includes six units of affordable housing for homeless veterans. By adding 18 units, the Veterans Center will be poised to substantially, permanently reduce veteran homelessness in Hudson County. For more than a century the Post has been serving those who served their country.

UPDATE: JBJ Soul Foundation is proud to share that our match has been met and we are thankful for the support of this project.  On December 7, 2021, the JBJSF presented a grant for $100,000 at the groundbreaking ceremony held by the American Legion Post 107.

Meals Purchased in Monmouth County Near 20,000 as FeedNJ Program Becomes a Community Staple

JBJ Soul Kitchen provides over 6,000 meals to the FeedNJ Program.

NEW JERSEY—Many more New Jerseysans are experiencing food insecurity due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but receiving free food from soup kitchens and community giveaways feels different when that food comes from a beloved community restaurant. FeedNJ, the flagship program operated by nonprofit Soup Kitchen 411, has brought smiles to people experiencing food insecurity, relief for overworked soup kitchen crews, and critical business to beloved local restaurants. To date, the program has bought and served nearly 20,000 meals in and from Monmouth County, with a mandate to exceed 30,000 by Thanksgiving.

“I first became involved with Soup Kitchen 411’s FeedNJ program last Spring to make sure local restaurants got much-needed business, and I could not be more thrilled with the economic impact it has had in Monmouth County,” said Senator Vin Gopal. “In particular, the program has purchased over 10,000 meals combined from JBJ Soul Kitchen and No Limits Cafe, which have a ‘Pay it Forward’ model and employ people with intellectual disabilities, respectively. These are not just beloved restaurants with great food, but with socially-conscious missions.”

As New Jersey prepares for vaccine passports to roll out, restaurant owners express their relief at the regularity of large quantities of meals purchased from Soup Kitchen 411.

“JBJ Soul Kitchen is a community restaurant that serves an in-need and paying customer. Our unique “Pay it Forward” model allows diners, who are able to donate, to cover the cost of those in need who have volunteered for their meals. Meals purchased by Soup Kitchen’s FeedNJ program at retail price enable us to continue to generate revenue while donating more meals to those in need,” said Dorothea Bongiovi, founder of JBJ Soul Kitchen in Red Bank and Toms River.

Of the meals served in Monmouth County, over 6,000 have come from JBJ Soul Kitchen, including 5,600 purchased in the past six months through the state EDA’s Sustain and Serve NJ grant. During this grant period, 3,525 meals have come from No Limits Cafe, a lunch cafe employing people with intellectual disabilities.

Over 50 soup kitchens, food pantries, houses of worship, local nonprofits, community outreach groups and municipal health departments have worked with Soup Kitchen 411 to distribute meals to the community. Almost a dozen local PBAs and Police Departments joined in the fight in July.
